FALL 2011 READY TO WEAR FASHION REVIEW | MY FAVORITES

Posted in Fashion, Fashion Week, Trends with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 6, 2011 by Me & Marisa

First off, I just got home last night from a whirlwind nine days in LA that encompassed more experiences and meeting more people than I could have ever dreamed of. I attended Elton John’s Oscar party (pre, during, and after-parties) so I’ll put pics up from that as soon as I get them from my friend who took them (who is currently back in the UK and being hard to get a hold of haha).

In the meantime though- Let’s roll right into the Fall Fashion Shows that have been going on while I was off in La-La-Land.

Right off the bat- I looked at several designers and I saw some very… well… plain looks. Lots of very futuristic hoods and TONS of black and white. I know it’s Fall, and when done the right way I don’t get mad. But this is 2011 and not 2046- I’m not ready to start seeing the “pod-suit” look just yet (yes, even if they are jazzed up in primary colors like plain red, yellow and blue).

On the flip end of the spectrum, I also saw quite a few looks that seemed to evoke a slightly prairie girl/Amish feel. Also not a fan, but at least they are trying different things.  If I had to pick, I’d pick the Prairie girl over the pod-people any day. For example, Rodarte did the best job translating the trend I saw;

So here are some of my favorites (part 1 that is… there were just too many)

TRENDS CHEAT SHEET:
Sheer
’70s Influences
Metallic
Purple
Prairie Girl
FUR!
Futuristic

Carolina Herrera

Never one to disappoint- Carolina certainly put out a strong collection this season and was one of my hands-down favorites.

Brioni

Another one of my favorites this season- I love that (sorry PETA) fur is coming back in all the right ways. Also, I’m really digging the pops of ultraviolet purple that are coming through in several of the collections.

Hervé Léger by Max Azria

This was the first time I really have taken a look at Hervé Léger and I have to say, owned by Max Azria or no- I loved it! Some really innovative designs that were pulled together flawlessly.

This last one is WOW!  In my opinion, this is “futuristic trend” done properly.

Balmain

Words cannot even begin to describe how great I found this collection; fur, metallics, amazing party dresses. Yes, yes, yes!

Rodarte

These two are evolving beautifully in their fashion careers, and it’s been really fun to watch them grow and develop. Their prints this collection were like wearable art- especially on their gowns. Great work definitely.

Rick Owens (Bear with me on this one)

Okay so, prepare to broaden your fashion horizons just a bit and embrace Rick Owens. EXTREME futurism, but if you are able to look at the individual pieces versus the overall look, there is genius here without a doubt.

Yes I know, this is the same pod-person look I said I hated…
This is like a crazy angel went to a Halloween party, and I’m digging it so much! It’s insane haha.

Barbara Bui

Another first timer for me and wow- I will definitely be adding the lovely Ms. Bui to my watch list from now on.

Almost the same outfit as the Balmain, just goes to show you how much I like it 😉

Random Additional

There is where the miscellaneous leftover “likes” go. We have Barbara Tfank as the first two looks, followed by Dries Van Noten (not crazy about the whole collection, but I liked the emerald and black paired with this skirt.), then Alexander Wang with the perfect example of the sheer trend. And finally a lovely look by Balenciaga!

Not sure why, but I’m really liking this- it ALMOST looks like she could be preggo… but it works for some reason.

Tell me that isn’t an awesome jacket and I will call you a liar.

FASHION’S NIGHT OUT | MUCH DELAYED

Posted in Fashion, Fashion Week, New York, Shoes, Sightseeing, Street Style, Trends with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 17, 2010 by Me & Marisa

Hello hello hello! This is MUCH delayed and about a week and 1/2 over my own personal deadline, but take pity on me… I’m a new daddy 🙂 (again). I just adopted a rescue dog that someone had dumped on my parents road. I’ll put up pictures soon but her name is Ellie and she is everything I’ve ever wanted in a dog. Such a sweet girl and makes me very happy :).

Anywho, on the to the fashion stuff. As promised, here are some of the much over-due photos from Fashion’s Night Out during my Fall Fashion Week trip to NYC. Enjoy! And hope you’re week is going well!

Standing in line for our first event of the evening; Opening Ceremony at the Ace Hotel

Turning the corner and seeing the sign for the Ace was a most beautiful sight haha.
Once inside the Ace Hotel, the event was set up like a bazaar or a marketplace… only with fabulous swag instead of vegetables and trinkets.

Nicolas and I thought there was more upstairs, so we accidentally hopped on an elevator with some people (you had to have a key haha) and when asked “What floor?” by the others I – ever so nonchalantly – said “Same as you actually.” I’m sure they knew, but who cares ha.
In two words- love it :)… especially followed by “no smoking”
A letter to the Ace Hotel guests in the elevator.
My future address… Trump Park East
On our way to Bergdorf Goodman’s Fashion Night Out party… all of the cameras are because Sarah Jessica Parker was just getting out of her limo.
Unspeakably gorgeous. These were the Bergdorf Goodman window displays for the night. Zero photoshopping on this.

I felt like such a Vogue photographer with these window displays.
Some by-gone diva was singing in one of the windows for those waiting in line.

And at long last, we turned the final corner and…
… we’re in… (to be continued)

GUEST BLOG- LES FEMMES

Today we’re doing something we’ve never done before here on Me & Marisa, and that is having a guest blogger. Today the post is coming from one of my extremely fashion savvy friends; Nicolas Bebout. Nicolas has aspirations to go to work at a New York City modeling agency, so it seems only fitting that he would be doing a post on his favorite models of the year. Hope you all had a great weekend! I’m afraid I’m down with the flu :/. Take it away Nicolas!

Fresh Faces…Different Places: Les Femmes
Fashion may make the man, but a model is what creates the excitement…at least I think so anyways. I thought it would be a brilliant idea for Me and Marisa to have a couple posts about models that were outstanding this past season/year. So I pitched the idea to Andrew and here we are!

Abbey Lee
Perhaps my favorite female model that is making a huge name for herself at the moment. Lee is making her mark on the runway, walking in shows this past season for the likes of Givenchy, Gucci, Phillip Lim, Zac Posen and Lanvin, just to name a few. She has also made her mark in editorials, major ad campaigns (Calvin Klein and Gucci fragrance), and even walked in the 2009 Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Watch out, this girl is on fire!!

Anna Selezneva
A standout from when I saw her walk the Michael Kors Fall 2009 show, Anna Selezneva reminds me of younger Jessica Stam with her piercing eyes and ability to really take on whatever she is modeling. Selezneva had a great runway season for the Spring 2010 shows and is sure to be back for the Fall 2010 season.

Maryna Linchuk
Maryna has created a great balance between editorial/covers and runway. She excelled in the Spring 2010 show season and creates a great presence when she is photographed.

Toni Garrn
Toni had a great year, especially in print. While Garrn walked in shows like Bottega Veneta, Christian Dior, Fendi, and Chanel, her print work is what got my attention. Major advertising campaigns and covers propelled Toni to more than just a runway model and I can’t wait to see where she shows up next year.
